About Paul Gentille
My art begins as original digital photographic images. I feel my Canon digital cameras and lenses, iPad, iPhone, iMac, and Photoshop software, are all tools that allow me to push the limits of my creativity. As an artist, how I use these exciting tools and explore their possibilities and limitations is - as with any other medium and tool - determined by my skill and talent.
To achieve my unique results, I combine many different digital techniques, including photographic manipulation and image editing, painting tools to emulate the natural media, digital collage, and layering. For example, a flower or piece of hardscape can be split up into many individual elements such as color, texture, and shadows. These digital elements may then be duplicated, moved, and piled up on successive layers in a completely new composition which is transformed into a unique piece of digital fine art.
As a photographer and digital fine artist, I embrace the use of computer tools to expand the limits of my visual exploration. Since I use digital tools rather than the more traditional oils or watercolors, I am asked frequently if my artwork can be completed more quickly on a computer. For me, the time it takes to complete a digital work is roughly equivalent to work created with physical materials. The difference being that time formerly spent with material concerns, now goes into exploring and pushing my digital compositions to their limits. With the luxury of an Undo, I work with my mouse and dance between hand and eye, mixing imagination and material with the familiar look of paint on canvas or prints on archival papers.
